Habitually, flea infestations are introduced inside the home by pets or by people. And the close interaction between pets and owners increase the chances of getting bitten. Flea bites are typically painful and mostly localised at ankle/lower leg level. Nevertheless flea bites can also take place on any other part of the body (from bed and sofa).
You do not need to own a pet to be infested by fleas. And fleas can multiply even in an environment without pets.
How to get rid of fleas
Once they are inside the home, the only way of getting rid of fleas is to kill them off and make sure that no more fleas are going to be reintroduce. So the strategy will be two fold: simultaneously treat the pet and carry out a flea treatment in the home.
Flea control at home
Fleas are the 2nd toughest pest and require a powerful mix of pesticides. They are crawling insects and the most efficient way to deal with them is to spray residual insecticide on the floor and any other surfaces they may regularly go to.
Adult fleas are mostly found directly on the pets but they only represent a small proportion. The bulk of the flea infestation is actually spread all over the home in the form of eggs, larvae and pupae. All all affected areas need to be treated thoroughly.
In lab conditions, the pesticides activity can be stretched to a few months. But in field conditions, the natural decay of the pesticides will reduce its efficacy after a few weeks. Since the life cycle of fleas is 3-4 weeks, we carry out 2 visits at two weeks interval to ensure that pesticide activity is maximal throughout for optimal results.
We use a highly concentrated mix of pesticides and insect growth regulators (alpha-cypermethrin, tetramethrin, pyriproxyfen, piperonyl butoxide, lambda-cyhalothrin). All together, the active chemicals attack the various development stages of fleas from different angle simultaneously.
Pets at home flea treatment
There is a large industry surrounding it. Flea treatment products can be found under various formulations: shampoos, once-a-month topicals, aerosol and pump bottle sprays to flea collars. There are also non-pesticide based solutions available.
Veterinarian flea treatment
Personally what i value the most are shampoos&comb and once-a-months topicals.
The important thing to keep in mind is that every product has been designed with a certain use in mind. You cannot use the flea shampoo to treat a rug and flea spray that was designed for direct use on the pet to treat a full home.
Flea control using home remedy
There are a number of essential oil extract that are being used as flea repellent. I personally use Tea Tree oil extract , but others use lavender or cedar oil extract. The down side is that you need to put a few drops on a daily basis on a piece of fabric (bandana or collar).
There is also use of natural acids such as lemon juice, or cider vinegar diluted into a solution being sprayed directly on the fur or applied with a brush or sponge.
We can also use scent sachets filled up with dry aromatic plants and place them on the pet sleeping station.
But all the above should really be done ongoingly as a preventive routine rather that a reactive flea treatment.
Getting rid of fleas on your pet sleeping cushion or mat.
This is possibly the easiest thing to do. Take the full thing and put it in the washing machine on a long hot wash cycle, above 60 °C. There is of course a chance that such treatment cause damage on certain designs. So the alternative to hot washing could be deep freezing: -18 °C for 2-3 days.
Flea removal from the carpet
Vacuuming thoroughly would take away up to 50% of the flea problem. It can be quite labour intensive but it will make a great difference especially for carpets. Once you are done you need to get rid of the collected dirt into a sealed bag without delay.
This vacuum cleaning routine would have to be repeated daily. But on its own, it will not get rid of fleas entirely.
How to eradicate fleas using heat treatment
If you own a powerful steam cleaner you can use it on the flooring, but also on the soft furnishing. It is even more labour intensive than the above but steam has the potential to achieve a complete flea eradication. You may have to repeat the operation a few time it the flea bites persist.
How to kill fleas in a sandpit
Nurseries sometime worry and refuse to use pesticides inside the sandpit. Parents do not like the idea of their children playing in the midst of residual chemicals. The way round to it is to pour large amount of salt inside the sand, and only spray around the sand pit.
Note: if a flea infestation is localised in your yard, possibly due to a fox activity, you would not be able to use salt as it may be detrimental to the lawn.
